Anime is Japanese animation and Manga is Japanese comics books. The first anime was a hand-drawn animation made in 1917 called "Hanawa Konai's Famous Sword" by Junichi Kouchi and Nikkatsu. The first manga was Santo Kyoden's "Shiji no yukikai" (四時交加) distributed in 1798. Astro Boy (鉄腕アトム), first published as a manga series in 1952 and then made into an anime broadcast on TV in 1963, is one of the most famous cartoon characters.
