Paddington Bear
Who is Paddington?
Paddington Bear is a fictional character in children's literature. He first appeared in 1958 and was subsequently featured in several books written by Michael Bond and first illustrated by Peggy Fortnum. This year is Paddington's 50th anniversary. A book has been written to celebrate (see below) and a number of special Paddington bears have been created to mark this special occasion.

When Paddington arrived in the UK from Peru, his only item of clothing was a Red Peruvian Hat. The Browns family gave Paddington his name and took him into their family home. Mr Curry is Paddington's next door neighbour who can't stand the sight of the little bear. Mr Gruber is Paddington's best friend. Marmalade (and now Marmite) is Paddington's favourite food. Paddington wears a duffel coat that was given to him by the Browns.

History of Paddington Bear
Michael Bond (Author)
'It was created with love and it was born with that indefinable something known as star quality' - Michael Bond, author of the "Paddington Bear" stories.
Shirley Clarkson (Creator)
Shirley Clarkson grew her company, Gabrielle Designs, from a tiny spare-room business selling tea cosies in Doncaster into an international business shipping Paddington Bears all over the world.
The Business
With no business experience, and no capital, Shirley came up with the original - now classic - Paddington design of hat, raincoat and wellies. Manufacturing from a collection of ramshackle farm buildings, she was hit by a wave of orders from retailers, as the world went Paddington-crazy. From Tokyo to Sydney to San Francisco, everybody was growling for Paddington Bears.
Thriving
Turnover leapt to a million a year, Gabrielle Designs was hailed as a British success story, and Shirley was invited to meet the Queen at Doncaster Mansion House. For those who appreciate tales of triumph and adversity, the history of Paddington bear is one worth reading.
50th Anniversary
Celebrate Paddington's 50th Anniversary with this exquisite commemorative edition books. Abridged and illustrated in spectacular full-colour throughout, including previously unpublished artwork by the original illustrator, Peggy Fortnum, this beautiful keepsake will enchant established Paddington fans and a new generation of readers alike. "A bear on Paddington Station?" said Mrs Brown in amazement. "Don't be silly, Henry. There can't be." Paddington Bear had travelled all the way from darkest Peru when the Brown family first met him on Paddington station. Since then their lives have never been quite the same! for ordinary things become quite extraordinary when a bear called Paddington is involved.
A Bear Called Paddington by Michael Bond (Author), Peggy Fortnum (Illustrated), and Stephen Fry (Narrated)
