Choosing a computer for a child
Here are some questions to ask yourself when considering to buy a computer for your child.
- Why am I buying the computer? To better prepare him/her for the real world.
- Is it for the the whole family? Do you need to invest in a more powerful computer.
- Will my child outgrow the system when he/she becomes more skilled in using it? Children learn quickly. With a year or two a computer will likely be outdated. Purchasing a more expensive system will mean less hassle later on.
- Can the computer produce graphs, charts, and reports? This is important.
- Does come with the standard office applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel? It is important to use real-world software, especially Microsoft Office and similar software.
- What about software - electronic encyclopedia's, electronic dictionaries, firewalls, and anti-virus? Can you trust what's online. Ensure you kit up the computer with all the correct software.
- Does it have enough memory to run graphical programs? Typically 1GB to 2GB recommended for most systems
- Does it have enough hard-disk space to store images, video, and documents? What about external storage to allow your children to transport data to and from school? Typically 80GB to 500GB is what is useful.
- For older children, is there enough space to store music and computer games? Games can take up 1GB - some even more. If you do a calculation based on the average software being 1GB then you will realize that 80GB is not that much - enough for about 80 software packages and games - quickly filled.
- A photo from a camera can be a 1MB. 1000 photos = 1GB. 80GB = 80,000 photos. It's not normally that simple as there will be video as well. Video size = 100MB to 1GB each. So you need to consider a mixture of software, photos, and video. All in all, the more harddrive space you have the better.
- Should you purchase a desktop or laptop? Desktop's are usually less expensive than laptops when you consider the overall speed to cost ratio. Desktop's are also more robust and less easily lost or broken.
- Laptops are useful for taking to study with friends or at a library. You may want to take out an extra warranty to get the screen repaired as the screen is the most fragile part of the laptop.
- Laptops are easy to move around the house - for example - doing homework in the kitchen and then moving to a more quiet spot.
- Are you setup for broadband? Fast broadband is essential. It will save your child's time. Allowing them to be more productive.
- Generally, you should opt for the fastest CPU (processor) available. There are always a number of options. Choose the best processor you can afford. Over 1.5Ghz and preferably "dual core" - two CPUs for better multiprocessing.
- Choose the fastest graphics card - the performance of a computer is dramatically affected by the graphics card
- Get a DVD writer - storing, offloading data, writing photo cds, handing in projects on CD/DVD
- Don't forget things like memory sticks, printers, keyboards, and a mouse

"This machine is fantastic - I purchased mine with Vista Home Premium - I have been completely satisfied. It has done everything I have asked it to. Compatibility was not a problem - was able to find updated drivers for my Canon scanner and Epson Printer. It worked so well that after my daughter who is very frugal and does not approve of new gadgets until they have been tested by time - ordered her own XPS 420 within a week of seeing mine. She even took a day off work without pay to make sure she would be home when it was delivered.", DD

"Boots up reasonably fast, runs extremely fast. Ordered with Q6600 Quad processor and 3Gb memory 800Mhz. Graphics are exceptional. Most people order Nvidia, but researched ATI Radeon 2600XT and opt'd for it. Best graphics I've seen to date. Monitor is very good. Ordered 22" ultrasharp, again exception graphics. System run very quite and cool. Our Dimension 4700 is much noisier and seem to heat the room. Wireless network card worked perfectly, did not have to do anything. Started up the computer it recognized the wireless router signal and we were in business! All the software works (all that I have used), no issues. Monitor came with several cables for hook up, not sure why? My son uses it for his games and loves the graphics and speed (games don't lag).", WA
